Fayette residents grow more concerned about smog problems

According to a recent Clean Air Campaign survey, more than 82 percent of Fayette County and other suburban Atlanta residents view metro Atlanta's smog as a serious problem.

Unfortunately, many Fayette and suburban citizens do not believe their actions will help improve metro Atlanta's air quality.

“Metro Atlanta's smog is not strictly a downtown problem,” said Lucy Smethurst, director of the Clean Air Campaign. “Fayette County residents and the similar outlying suburban areas are equally affected. Since cars and trucks all over the 13-county metro area are producing emissions that create smog, we are each responsible for helping improve our region's air quality, but Fayette citizens also have it within their power to make a difference in helping improve the region's air quality.”

The survey found that 74 percent of Fayette residents and other suburban county residents are concerned that air pollution could affect their health or the health of a family member.

To help improve the air, Fayette residents can take simple steps to help improve the air. The Clean Air Campaign recommends:

• Combining errands.

• Sharing a ride.

• Purchasing items on-line.

• Refueling your car after 6 p.m.

• Carpooling.
