Trash pickup rates fall in Tyrone

Garbage collection just got a little cheaper in Tyrone.

Last week, the Tyrone town Council gave unanimous support to awarding a three-year waste removal contract to United Waste.

The citizen's new rate is $36 a quarter, or a 14 percent reduction, said town manager Barry Amos.

Amos said the county chose United Waste because of the company's pricing and service record.

“We're going to get a little bit more for our money,” he added.

United Waste's Floyd Cherry told the Town Council that garbage pickup would occur on the same days and he pledged to work with the community on making a smooth transition and providing exceptional service.

In other news from last week's meeting, county water director Tony Parrott asked the town to consider the whole town when looking at the sewerage question.

The town is currently in negotiations with the city of Fairburn to provide 220,000 gallons a day of sewerage capacity for two high-profile developments.

Sewer lines would be connected to a John Wieland subdivision on the north side of town and a proposed office park on Ga. Highway 74.

But Parrott asked town officials to eventually look at providing sewerage to some of the homes in the older part of town.
