Ruth Hill teacher is a state finanlist for excellence in math and science

Ruth Hill Elemetnary School teacher Sheila Chapman has been selected as a state finalist for the National Science Foundation's Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching Program.

This distinction places Chapman among the nation's most outstanding teachers in math and science, exemplifying qualities of innovative and creative teaching, content expertise and exceptional leadership, said a spokesman for the award.

As one of three state finalists, Chapman is eligible for consideration as a 1999 Presidential Award recipient. These awardees will be announced duri ng winter 2000.

As a state finalist, Chapman will receive $750 in funds from the NSF to be spent for professional development and/or for the improvement of math and science in her school or classroom.

Chapman has received many other awards and recognitions in her outstanding teaching career. She has been featured in a Georgia Public Television presentation called “What's Right in Education.”

In addition, she has been selected as an Atlanta Journal Constitution Honor Teacher, has received the Anthony Molinaro PAGE Scholarship, has received the Quality Service Award from the Georgia Association on Young Children, and was named the Coweta County Teacher of the Year in 1993.
