Last fling of the century

By MICHAEL BOYLAN

Though it certainly does not feel like summer is nearing an end, the 10th annual Last Fling signals the beginning of a new school year.

Students in Fayette County will enter the hallowed halls of their educational institutions on Aug. 16 and to make sure the summer ends with a bang the Peachtree City Commission on Children and Youth and The Peachtree City Recreation Department once again sponsor the Last Fling.

Since 1989, there have been activities, games, entertainment, refreshments and crafts in the Peachtree City Recreation Complex. Skateboarders cruise through obstacles in the parking lot or slide up and down the half-pipe, while bike riders race around the BMX track. The Last Fling has something to interest every child of every age.

This year will be the Last Fling of the Century and it looks to be one of the larger events since its inception.

One of the new attractions will be a 24-foot-high rock climbing wall. The wall can accommodate four climbers, three will be fitted with beginner ropes with safety harnesses while the other will be a more challenging climb. The cost is $2 per climb.

There will also be a moon walk and a train ride around Shakerag Knoll for both young and old.

As always there will be plenty of entertainment. The first act scheduled is Rachel Ferguson, Peachtree City Recreation Department instructor, who performs state wide with Rachel Ferguson's Cloggers and Western Dance Team. She will take the pavilion stage at 11:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The new teen club, Jitterbuggers, will dazzle the audience with an interpretation of swing dancing at 2:30 p.m. Several youth bands will play at 1:30 and 3 p.m.

Possibly the best news is that the event, excluding the rock wall, is free.

There will be safety demonstrations from the Peachtree City Fire Department and the Fayette Safe Kids Coalition coordinator Robert Kurbes, as well as nature talks and crafts presented by the Flat Creek Nature Center.

Volunteers 13 and older are needed to man the game booths and help during the day. There will be a free T-shirt for anyone who volunteers for two or more hours. Call 770-631-2542 to volunteer or get more information.
