Coweta's taxes are 13th lowest in state

By JOHN THOMPSON

If you think taxes are high in Coweta, you would be amazed at some of the rates of our neighbors.

Unincorporated Coweta County had the 13th lowest millage rates among Georgia's 159 counties, according to a recent report by the Georgia Department of Revenue.

The numbers were presented at last week's commission meeting and Commissioner Jim McGuffey said he was quite pleased with results.

While McGuffey praised county officials for maintaining a watchful eye on the numbers, Commissioner Vernon “Mutt” Hunter said the county probably ranks a little lower when all factors are considered.

“A lot of those counties ranked ahead of us don't provide the level of services that we do,” he said.

Coweta's unincorporated millage rate was 5.38 mills, which is significantly lower than neighboring Fulton County's 9.58 mills.

Coweta's neighbor to the east, Fayette County, has a lower millage rate for operating the county government — 5.21 — but has a significantly higher school millage rate.

Coweta's school millage rate is 17.88 with an additional 2.5 mills for a school bond, while Fayette's school rate is 19.84 with 4.15 mills for a school bond.

The county's total millage rate is 25.76, while Fayette's is 29.2.

The county commissioners pointed out the county has continued to lower its part of the millage rate for six consecutive years, while subsequently raising the types of services provided to residents.

Other metro millage rates included:

F Clayton-21.75 mills.

F Fulton-31.0 mills.

F Gwinnett-30.9 mills.

F DeKalb-33.08 mills. ½w½w½w½ooooÄ0ê
