MONROE ROARK There are now two preferred providers for trash pickup in Peachtree City. The City Council voted last week to award this designation to both United Waste Service Inc. and Environmental Providers Inc. after it was determined that the previous ruling, which gave the contract solely to United, should be changed. City staff discovered that the timeliness of United's response to the bid request and EPI's revision of its own proposal necessitated a second look at the situation. United recently acquired by All-South Robertson, which was already providing service to Peachtree City residents along with EPI. Due to All-South Robertson's failure to notify United of the bid situation in a timely manner, the company's response was delivered the day after the deadline stipulated in the city's specifications. After the two firms were interviewed, along with C & C Disposal, United was recommended by city staff. Upon learning this, EPI offered to match any prices offered by United. The City Council agreed with staff that, in view of these circumstances, the new arrangement was the fairest and best way to deal with the situation. Representatives of both companies were present at the meeting and said they were satisfied with co-preferred provider status. The council directed staff to make certain that the city's monthly Update newsletter clearly shows what each company provides and what the costs are for residents.
