City manager could be in Senoia's future

After years of discussion, Senoia could have a city manager on board by the middle of next month.

Mayor Joan Trammell told a small crowd at Monday night's City Council meeting that four candidates would be interviewed for the position July 30.

After the interviews are completed, a recommendation will be forwarded to the council for a decision at either its Aug. 2 or Aug. 16 meeting, according to city clerk Betty Armstrong.

The new city manager will be a part-time contract worker who will help the city deal with writing grants and dealing with the complexities of dealing with the town's supercharged growth.

The city has debated the merits of a city manager for several years, but Trammell decided the time was right, for at least a part-time manager to help the city run better.

In other news from Monday's meeting, the council:

ä Listened to a request from Phillip Hembree to use the corner of Ga. Highway 16 and Luther Bailey Road for a sales center for small utility trailers.

Hembree said all new trailers would be on the site and he promised to keep the area well-maintained.

Trammell said she had no problem with him placing his business there, but objected to the number of real estate signs that were already on the location.

“It's too cluttered. If you can get all those other signs down, I would have no problem with you putting your business there,” she said.

Hembree said that he did not own the property, but would talk to the owner to see if the signs could be removed. The council voted to allow the trailer sales business at the location, provided all other signs are moved.

ä Decided to wait on further information before paying dues to the Chattahoochee-Flint Regional Development Center.

Trammell said she would like to see a list from the RDC on grants the agency has helped the city write and the success rate of the grants before agreeing to pay the dues.

While she believes the agency has done some good work for the city, including helping with the city's new zoning regulations, Trammell would still like more information before approving the 1999 dues.
