First Christian stresses ministry for members

A church with a heart for ministry, the First Christian Church of Tyrone is dedicated to the biblical idea that every believer is called by God to serve in His Kingdom.

This congregation of 400 members first began in 1899 under a brush arbor in College Park, moved to Old National Highway in 1966 and again relocated, this time to Tyrone in 1995.

They believe that in order to have a heart for ministry, members must worship regularly, serve eagerly, give generously and live worthily. Only when members accept the challenge to take part in each of these concepts can the church call itself Christian and become a church with a heart for ministry, church leaders say.

The senior pastor is the Rev. Wye Huxford. He was born and reared in Berkely County, S.C.

He first felt called into the ministry as a teenager and was graduated from Atlanta Christian College with a degree in Christian ministry and the Cincinnati Christian Seminary, where he majored in New Testament and theology.

His first church was in Kentucky and then he came to Georgia in 1976 as a professor of Greek and New Testament at Atlanta Christian College. He still serves as an adjunct faculty member.

Called to the First Christian Church in 1983 as interim pastor, he was called a year later to serve as its senior minister.

He has been married to Vicky since 1973, and they are the parents of Sarah, a junior at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., and Bethany, who is a senior at Sandy Creek High School.

What direction would he like the congregation to go from here? “I would like to see us become even more involved in missions around the world,” he said.

Sunday morning worship is at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., with Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday evenings at 5:45 p.m. is a fellowship meal, with adult Bible study electives at 6:30 p.m.

The church is at 294 Jenkins Road, Tyrone, and it can be reached at 770-969-7346.
