Movies

Opening Friday

Eyes Wide Shut — Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star in Stanley Kubrick's final movie. Secrecy surrounds much of the plot but Kubrick always was a perfectionist. Rated R.

Lake Placid — Much like the film Anaconda, this movie focuses on the terror of a giant crocodile in a lake in Maine. The previews look pretty good. Just don't go in expecting “Gandhi” and you'll be o.k. Rated R.

Now Playing

American Pie — Certainly not worth all the hype but not as raunchy as they make it sound like it is. Some parts are gross but there is a sweetness and innocence to the tale. It is entertaining. Rated R.

Arlington Road — Jeff Bridges plays an expert on terrorism and Tim Robbins plays his terroristic neighbor. My mom loved it. She said she was on the edge of her seat through the whole film. Rated R.

Austin Powers 2 : The Spy Who Shagged Me — Hysterically funny with bigger laughs than the first. It can be a little bawdy so don't just drop the kids at the film. Rated PG-13.

Big Daddy — A funny movie and very cute. It is in the same vein as The Wedding Singer, having less to do with the likes of Happy Gilmore. I liked it though. Rated PG-13.

The General's Daughter — John Travolta plays an investigator looking into the murder of ...the general's daughter. Lots of suspense and drama, I just hope he sings “Greased Lightning.” Rated R.

The Mummy — A fun action adventure starring Brendan Fraser. The effects are nice and there are a few jumpy type suspenseful moments. Rated PG-13.

Notting Hill — Julia Roberts plays a world famous actress and Hugh Grant plays the charming owner of a charming bookstore. This is the date movie right now. Rated PG-13.

South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut — Do not take the children! This is really sharp and funny but also very raunchy. I've seen it three times and it gets better and better. Rated R.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace — So, it's not the second coming. This is a great movie with effects that mess with your mind long after. It is a perfect beginning to the story and the performances are great. Rated PG.

Summer of Sam — This movie has elements of all of Spike Lee's films but not the heart of one of them. The acting is strong but the film is way too long. Stay away. Rated R.

Tarzan — Disney didn't make a lot of noise about this movie, but it makes as big a splash as the best of them. It has a good story, nice songs and incredible visuals. Rated G.

Wild, Wild West — Number one movie in America right now but the reviews have been terrible. I don't know where it went wrong, I guess I'll wait until it hits the dollar theater to find out. Rated PG-13.

Also Playing

Black Mask — Jet Li, the bad guy in Lethal Weapon IV, plays a masked hero in this Hong Kong action film. Rated R.

•  Doug's First Movie — The hit cartoon takes to the big screen and entertains and educates his way through 90 minutes. The voices have changed recently, but it still has a great sense of humor. Rated G.

Entrapment — Sean Connery is a burglar and Catherine Zeta Jones is a cop. What do you think will happen? Rated PG-13.

Forces of Nature — A man finds true love away from his fiance'. Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock star. Rated PG-13.

Life — Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence are wrongly imprisoned for Life. It's surprising how funny prison can be. Rated R.

•  The Love Letter — The same letter is found by several people at different times, and all think the letter is for them. Comedy ensues. Starring Tom Selleck and Kate Capshaw. Rated PG-13.

•  A Midsummer Night's Dream — Shakespeare's romantic romp gets updated to 19th Century Tuscany. Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer star. rated PG-13.

•  October Sky — This film has received rave reviews from everybody I know. It is said to be very inspirational. Rated PG.

•  The Out of Towners — A remake of the Neil Simon classic that flopped like nobody's business. Goldie Hawn, Steve Martin and John Cleese don't typically fail, but this movie did. Rated PG-13.

•  Shakespeare in Love — The winner of the 1998 Academy Award for Best Picture. It really is good. Check it out. Rated R.

•  10 Things I Hate About You — A cute movie loosely based on Shakespeare's “The Taming of the Shrew.” You'll want to fall in love all over again. Rated PG-13.
