Community in Fayette stirs memories of hometowns in earlier times

Highgrove has been selected as the site of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles magazine's ninth annual Tour of Homes showcasing the Atlanta area's finest communities.

Scheduled the weekends of June 18-20 and June 25-27 from noon to 6 p.m. each day, the Highgrove Tour of Homes is entitled “A Sidewalk Adventure” and will feature the newly completed clubhouse, the “Meeting House”; four new homes on Meeting House Road; and other homes under construction throughout the community.

Highgrove is a new residential community in Fayette County specifically designed to emulate the traditional, neighborly Southern hometowns of earlier times.

Planned and developed by Kingston Hill Development company, Highgrove features tree-lined streets with sidewalks, spacious home sites, architecture incorporating elements of historical design in harmony with the comfortable traditions of the past, and an emphasis on recreational amenities and natural areas.

On the west side of Redwine Road five miles south of Fayetteville, the 630-acre Highgrove development is across the road from WhiteWater Country Club with its 18-hole Arnold Palmer-designed championship golf course. The Highgrove property is adjacent to the southeastern city limits of Peachtree City.

Kingston Hill Development Company is owned by Scott and Jennifer Barnett and Joel Cowan Jr., the son-in-law, daughter and son of Joel H. Cowan Sr., the original developer of Peachtree City who also developed Palmetto Dunes Resort on Hilton Head Island and Phipps Plaza in Atlanta.

The Highgrove planned unit development, begun in 1996, will ultimately have approximately 300 homes, priced from $300,000 and is currently entering the fifth and sixth of nine phases. With the initial four phases complete, there have been 55 new home sales in the community with home buyer interest in the community accelerating rapidly in recent months.

Each Highgrove home is built containing elements of design from small Southern towns and farm houses of the past or from historic cities such as Savannah and Charleston. This general theme of charm and casual elegance is carried throughout the community.

Five-foot sidewalks, with green space between the paved walkway and the street, and street lights along the tree-lined roadways create an eye-appealing streetscape and provide a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. The developer has added to the beauty of the development by planting a Sunset red maple tree at least every 75 feet.

Home sites are a minimum of one acre in size, and the homes are close to the sidewalk and street. Many homes have picket fences, front walks and large front porches, encouraging interaction with friends and neighbors. An open flame gas lantern adorns every front yard, and homeowners are encouraged to use indigenous plants such as Southern Magnolias, wisteria and American boxwood in their landscaping.

Other features found at many Highgrove homes include outdoor liveable spaces such as breezeways and conversation gardens with benches, and the large backyards provide private space for homeowners.

Interiors of the homes offer open and flowing designs and features more suited to today's life-styles.

Highgrove home buyers have the flexibility to choose their own custom plans and home sites and from any of the seven approved builders. The builder team is composed of well known and award-winning local companies, including Arbor Construction, Bob Dixon and Associates, Chris Parrott Homes, Darryl Graves Builders, Jordan Homes, Regency Homes and Trademark Builders. This group includes two past presidents of the Home Builders Association of Midwest Georgia and several past “Home Builders of the Year” from that organization.

The community has more than 89 acres of natural areas, parks and recreation area, including the private clubhouse, a reproduction of “Edgemont,” a Virginia plantation home built in 1976. Influenced by Thomas Jefferson's style of architecture, the “Meeting House” is tucked in among the old pecan trees where the Redwine home place once stood.

The clubhouse area will contain a swimming pool, four lighted tennis courts, playground, multipurpose athletic field and basketball. Highgrove will have three other parks in the community, complete with gazebos, benches and play areas, and there will be nature trails and natural areas.

Residents of Highgrove have easy access to the shopping districts, entertainment opportunities, medical facilities and churches in Fayetteville and Peachtree City area and to Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. The community is served by the Fayette County School System, which has some of the state's best public schools. The system's schools directly serving Highgrove are the new Peeple's Elementary, Rising Star Middle and Starr's Mill High schools.

In addition, several highly rated private schools are within short driving distance.
