Police in Peachtree City now have updated speed limits for all roads within the city limits, as the state has recently amended the city's speed zone ordinance. The city is allowed to update its permit every three to five years for the inclusion of new streets that meet state criteria for enforcement of speed limits using radar. State approval must be given before any street can be used for radar detection by local authorities. More than 170 road segments are detailed in the updated ordinance, with specific speed zones outlined for everything from state highways to subdivision streets. There are only two places in Peachtree City with a 55-mile-per-hour speed limit, at the northern and southern ends of the city on Ga. Highway 74. The easternmost city portion of Ga. Highway 54 allows for 50 mph, as does a short stretch of Hwy. 74. Aside from the two state highways, only Redwine Road has a 45-mph zone. All but 14 road segments in the city require 35 mph or less. City Council unanimously approved the revised speed zone ordinance at the June 17 regular meeting. While there were no major changes in the ordinance except for new streets and time changes for school zones, according to chief James Murray, the monthly city report shows a marked reduction in traffic citations from last year. A total of 2,114 citations and 1,728 warnings were reported for the first four months of 1999, compared with 3,087 citations and 1,795 warnings for the same period in 1998. Accidents are up this year, with 343 through the end of April compared to 289 last year in the same time period.
