Tyrone planning to build new town hall

By JOHN THOMPSON

The town of Tyrone is moving ahead with its ambitious plans for a new town hall.

The Town Council agreed last week to form a committee to find land for the new administrative complex. Committee members are councilman Ray Bogenschutz, councilman Paul Letourneau, planning commission member Lyn Redwood and town clerk Valerie Fowler.

The town is looking for 10 acres and has appropriated $180,000 in this year's budget to purchase the land. The new town center is part of the town's capital improvement program, which will also add new recreational facilities to the town.

While there's no money in this year's budget to start construction on a new town hall, town manager Barry Amos said the town is anxious to get the land purchase completed.

“We want to do this as quickly as possible, so we can move to the next step,” he said.

Amos estimated it will be two to three years before a new building is built.

In other news from last week's meeting, councilman Ronnie Cannon complimented county officials for presenting the town with a copy of the county's proposed overlay plans for Ga. Highway 74.

The county has only five parcels on the busy state highway and is recommending mirroring the restrictions Tyrone already has on the rest of the road.

Cannon has been critical of the county lately for not providing enough services for the amount of tax money the town sends to the county. But Cannon was happy with the proposed overlay and thanked the county for following the town's lead on Hwy. 74.
