Line Creek Baptist blossomed in the post-war era

The War Between The States was over by four years when Line Creek Baptist Church began in what is now Peachtree City.

Organized in August 1869 under a brush arbor, the first membership numbered six people. It currently enjoys a membership of 500 people.

Its first permanent house of worship was built in 1875 and this building was taken down in 1980 to construct its current sanctuary. The fellowship hall was added in 1992.

The senior citizens' group meets second Tuesdays, AWANA meets during the school term each year, and once a year, a ladies' ministry dinner is conducted with the men serving the ladies of the church. The ladies meet first Tuesdays.

The church is especially proud of its Silent Witness group, a class of 15 people who have learned to sign.

Pastor the Rev. Franklin Treadwell has served the congregation for 27 years.

He was born in Carroll County and his family moved to Coweta County when he was 13 years old.

He served in the United States Air Force for eight years. He later felt the pull into ministry and accepted the call to pastor at Line Creek Baptist in 1972.

He and his wife of 43 years, Mary, are the parents of five children: Leslie Chitwood, Latrelle Strickland, Lesa Royal and Jeffrey Treadwell, all of Newnan, and LeAnn Brown of Gay, Ga. They enjoy seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Worship services are each Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sunday School is at 10 a.m. There is a ladies' Bible study Tuesdays at 10 a.m., an adult Bible study Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and a prayer meeting Saturdays at 9 a.m.

The church is at 2711 Ga. Highway 54 W, Peachtree City, and can be reached at 770-487-9453.

After a year in this location, they looked around to see how they might better their worship experience, plus they needed a school in the community for their children.

A white neighbor, Flimester Arnold, gave them land to build their own church and he also gave them a stock of trees from which they acquired lumber for the project.

In 1897 the first building was constructed on the site of the current church, on Holly Grove Church Road in what is now southern Peachtree City.

By the 1940s the structure became old and unsafe and it the congregation decided to rebuild. The new structure stood until 1943 when a tornado completely demolished it, leaving only a Bible and a chair untouched.

Again the congregation began a rebuilding project and in 1944 another new building was in place.

In 1957 this building was remodeled inside and out and by 1969, the congregation was really progressing, both financially and spiritually. Many who had drifted away returned and in the mid 1970s the current structure was built.

The senior pastor is the Rev. David Morrow and the associate pastor is the Rev. Frances McAlpin. They came to the church in June 1997.

Morrow was born and reared in Palmetto, Ga. He had worked for the Sears Company for over 20 years, when he felt the call into ministry.

He is currently enrolled at the International Theological Center, Atlanta.

He lives in Atlanta with his wife, Mamie, and they are the parents of four children — David, Delethia, Devon and Darren — and the grandparents of three — Joslyn, Deshawna and Deanthony.

Sunday School is each Sunday at 10 a.m. with the worship service at 11 a.m. There is an evening prayer service each Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and Bible study follows at 7 p.m.

The church is at 400 Holly Grove Church Road, which runs off both Redwine Road and Robinson Road. The church can be reached at 770-631-7650.
