Signs under fire in Senoia

By JOHN THOMPSON

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign... except in Senoia.

City leaders grappled once again Monday night with the issue of placing signs at the city's entrances.

For years, city officials have debated, discussed and looked at different sign proposals to welcome visitors into the city.

Monday's debate was fueled when Councilman Kyle Frank, who also serves on the city's Downtown Development Authority, brought a proposal from the DDA to purchase signs.

Frank said the group had settled on a design and estimated the cost of placing signs at four entryways would run nearly $10,000.

After Frank's presentation, Councilman Judy Belisle, who has evaluated sign proposals in the past, asked why the DDA was not focusing on presenting its overall set of goals instead of focusing on signs.

Councilman Robert Hannah agreed with Belisle that the group was focusing too much on signs and suggested members get on to other business.

“Sewer is the best thing we're doing for downtown. They need to evaluate that,” he said.

Frank said the group wanted to show something visible for its work over the last year and said signs were something the city really needed.

Belisle countered that she had worked on the sign project for months and wanted to know where all her sign designs had gone. She said she had turned them over to the DDA, but Frank said he had not seen them.

Mayor Joan Trammell entered the fray and suggested that Belisle and Frank work together on a sign proposal and bring back some proposals for the council to consider, since they would provide the ultimate funding.

In the meantime, with the sign issue out of the way, Trammell said the DDA could focus on other areas and long term goals for the authority.

Frank also said the DDA wanted to change the boundaries of the authority's downtown area, but Trammell said that could not be accomplished until city attorney Kemp Wright determines if it is legal to change the boundaries established just last year.
