Changing of the guard at Landmark Christian

The announcement of Coach Bill Thorn's retirement from the Landmark Christian School football team was a bit shocking at first. Thorn had coached the War Eagles since the school's inception in 1989.

In a previous interview Thorn had said, “It was about time to give something up.” He alerted the team of his decision after their spring football game.

In his career as Landmark's football coach, Thorn amassed an overall record of 64-45-1. The War Eagles finished in second place in the region twice and advanced to the second round of the state playoffs on three different occasions. Thorn's motto while coaching football was, “Given time, hard work beats talent.”

Thorn will still be making his mark at Landmark, though. In the fall, he will coach the boys' and girls' cross country teams. He also will continue to coach the boys' track team, which he has led to seven straight region championships and four straight state titles. In addition to those positions, Thorn will be the head coach of the girls' track team, which finished in second place in the state this spring.

The coaching vacancy in football will be filled by assistant coach Tim Taylor. Taylor has been the offensive coordinator for the War Eagles for the last two years.

He has coached football in Bacon, Pierce and McIntosh counties during his 12-year coaching career. Taylor also will be the head coach of the baseball team in the spring.

Rick Hammock, the former baseball coach, will assume the coaching duties for the softball and the varsity girls' basketball programs.

The other coaching vacancy was for varsity boys' basketball. Coach Willie Reese, who has coached at Landmark for four years, has accepted the position of assistant coach under Coach Bobby Cremins at Georgia Tech.

Reese will be replaced by the man he replaced, Coach Mike Titus. Titus coached the boys' basketball team from 1989-1995.
