Old-fashioned summer favorite highlights New Hope UMC's Family and Friends Day

Members of New Hope United Methodist Church in Fayetteville celebrated “Family and Friends Day” on May 31 with a day filled with fellowship, games, watermelon cutting and other activities.

Elder Charlie Barkley spoke to the youth of the church on “Coming to Yourself,” addressing the issue of youth violence in schools and homes.

“With all the recent focus on violence, it is refreshing to see the youth come together for fellowship, fun and learning experiences,” a spokesperson said.

Adults joined in the festivities also, with members Blanch Grooms and Georgia Coggins contributing their memories of the old fashioned custom of planting the May pole, a ceremony directed by Ethel Forts, Mary Ann Borkin and Belinda McCastle.

“This is a game our grandparents may have played when they were children,” a spokesperson said. “The game was brought back to life by working with those who remembered it so well. Not only were the games passed on to the next generation, but the love of Christ was demonstrated by young and old alike working together.”

New Hope United Methodist Church is on Weldon Road in Fayetteville.
