Annexation on Senoia's agenda

By JOHN THOMPSON
Coweta Editor

Senoia residents will get an update Monday night on the status of the mediation between the city and Coweta County over an annexation dispute.

The dispute revolves around a 55-acre tract for single-famliy homes on Rockhouse Road that the city recently attempted to annex. Under House Bill 489, adopted last year by the state General Assembly, cities and counties have to work closer in handling annexation questions.

When Coweta County learned of the proposal, officials filed an objection based on lot size. The minimum lot size in the county is 1.6 acres, while Senoia's minimum lot size is one acre.

The county asked the city to require that any lots bordering county property be at least 1.6 acres in size, and also allow the county's planning department to sign off on the developer's final plat for the project.

At the June 7 council meeting, Mayor Joan Trammell said she could live with some of the county's requests, but felt that city staff are capable of evaluating plats and can do the job without county officials monitoring it.

Trammell's comments were sent back to the Coweta County Board of Commissioners and the mayor is set to brief the council with the latest facts on the issue.

Another interesting item on Monday's agenda is the payment of an invoice from 21st Century Coweta. At the June 7 meeting, Trammell instructed city attorney Kemp Wright to find out whether the city had committed to a four-year contract with the industrial recruiting agency.

The mayor said she wanted all the facts before she made a recommendation to the council.

The industrial recruitment agaency ahs come under heavy fire in the last few months from county leaders and Trammell want to know what the city is receiving from the group for its yearly dues before she pays the bill.

The Council meets Monday night at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
