Amazon.com drops anchor on the Southside

The world's largest Internet bookseller has dropped anchor on the south side of Atlanta.

At a press conference Wednesday, Gov. Roy Barnes announced that Amazon.com will locate a distribution center in Henry County.

Barnes said the new facility will create more than 1,000 jobs and represents an investment of $51 million.

Amazon.com is the Internet's leading book, video and CD retailer and will build an 800,000-sq. ft. distribution facility in McDonough. The Henry County facility will be the largest of the company's seven distribution centers and will allow customers in areas such as Atlanta, Nashville, Birmingham and New Orleans to receive their orders faster.

The center will open by the third quarter of this year and expects to employ more than 500 people within a few months of opening.

To staff the facility, the company will have recruiters at the Windy Hill Recreation Center in McDonough for an open house today, tomorrow and Saturday.

Recruiters will staff the open house from 10 a.m to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The company is accepting resumes for a variety of positions including distribution center associates, operations managers, human resource managers, facilities managers and area managers.

Barnes said the company's decision to locate in Georgia bodes well for the state's high technology community.

“Whatever you can find on the Internet, you can find in Georgia. Whatever you can find in Silicon Valley, in the Research Triangle, on Boston's Route 128, you can increasingly find here in Georgia,” he said.
