Youth Ballet kicks off big summer with 'Paquita'

The Georgia Youth Ballet, under the direction of Magdalena Maury, will present a company concert June 12 at Creekside High School.

This year the young dancers will perform the classical ballet “Paquita,” an energetic Spanish style dance in beautiful costumes. Excerpts from the popular “Graduation Ball” and a swing number will round out the program as this company shows its versatility.

The Georgia Youth ballet will then prepare for an intensive four-week workshop with teachers from all over the world. Students from all over the Southeast have signed up for this workshop, which will culminate in a free performance at Sams Auditorium July 9. Then it's off to New York City where dancers will take classes at the Broadway Dance Center, Steps, American Ballet Theatre and Joffrey.

The GYB ends its third season with an impressive record. Company members have received 30 dance scholarships in the past two years. All three graduating seniors received dance scholarships for college. Choreographers from New York have expressed interest in setting new works on this young company.

GYB was chosen to perform four ballets at the Southeast Regional Ballet Festival in Greenville, S.C. Members received four grants in recognition of their talent and community service.

Russian-born Vladimir Issaev set a full-length children's ballet on the company, which will be a United States premier.

The spring concert will be at 8 p.m. at Creekside High School auditorium. Phone 770-716-9858.
