Farner to bring some 'Grand Funk' to amphitheater this weekend

They had 12 platinum albums and 15 gold albums during their reign as the most commercially successful American heavy metal band from 1970 until 1976.

Their hits included “We're an American Band,” “Footstompin' Music” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.” They are Grand Funk Railroad and they are no longer together. But, song writer, lead vocalist and guitarist Mark Farner will perform Friday and Saturday at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, as part of the Webb, Stuckey, and Lindsey Summer Concert Series.

The band continuously toured in the 1970s, building a giant fan base and setting attendance records at arenas and stadiums. In 1971, the band sold out New York's Shea Stadium faster than the Beatles. Beginning with the Atlanta Pops Festival in 1969 and continuing for over a decade and a half, Farner's talent has placed him in a select group of rock artists who continue to have a solid and consistent following.

Tickets are $21 and seats are still available for both shows. Atlanta's own acappella pop/rock band, Live Wire, will open for Farner. The show will begin at 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Call 770-631-0630.
