The Guinness Book of World Records can hold a powerful allure for many people. Whether they choose to get in by wearing a 50 pound beard of bees while playing hopscotch for twelve straight hours or whether they choose to run a relay race, their achievements are still commendable.

There are 100 new entrants in the book this week and they are all from the area. Mike Mead, the cross country and track coach at Clayton College and State University, participated with 99 other gentleman over the age of 40 in a 100x1 mile relay. The group was assembled by the Atlanta Track Club.

The team finished the relay in 8:57:31, topping the previous mark set by 9:04:02 by the Houston Area Road Runners. The Atlanta crew was four minutes ahead of the pace after their 12th runner and they never looked back.

“It was fun to go after a world record and smash it,” said Mead. Next up, the beard made of bees.
