John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods recently built a storybook schoolhouse, complete with columns made of crayons and a bell perfect for ringing for class time. Along with other Playhouse Lane participants, Wieland helped contribute $15,000 to the Georgia Chapter of CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). CASA is an organization of trained volunteers who represent abused and neglected children in court. In this group of children, 76 percent are victimized by their own parents, so they often need responsible adults to help them through legal proceedings. The district court appoints a CASA volunteer to attend all proceedings and make recommendations in a child's best interest. Casas for CASA Playhouse Lane is an event coordinated by the Atlanta Alumnae Association of Kappa Alpha Theta and designed to provide builders, architects and corporate sponsors with an opportunity to reach more than 80,000 people while raising funds to support the work of CASA in the state of Georgia. Homebuilders and homebuilding suppliers were asked by Casas for CASA to create a special playhouse, which was raffled off during the Atlanta Home Show during March 1999. Wieland Homes was founded by John Wieland in 1970. The company is building in 60 neighborhoods in the Southeast, with 1,329 closings and revenues of $380 million last year. Named National Builder of the Year and National Housing Quality Award winner, the company is the Southeast's leading builder of move-up homes. Celebrating more than 14,000 customers, the Atlanta-based company also builds in Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.; Charleston and Columbia, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Nashville, Tenn.
