Commissioners set budget pace by cutting their own expenditures

By DAVE HAMRICK

Fayette County Commissioners said they want to set a budget-cutting example for department heads, and they've done so with a tentatively approved $455,004 budget for 2000.

That's $146,646 less than last year's $601,650 budget, even though it includes an additional staff person... on paper. Commission secretary Carol Chandler's salary and benefits were moved from the administration budget to the commission budget for greater accuracy, said county administrator Billy Beckett.

Among the cuts, the group included only $30,000 for communication this year, compared to last year's $72,000. Previous commissions have used the money to send brochures to residents explaining county programs.
