Local teams made a strong showing as the Peachtree City Tennis Center hosted the Peach State Junior Classic over the Memorial Day weekend.

The tournament featured top-ranked adolescents from all over the country showcasing their talents and playing for the crystal peach.

The tournament featured many players from the area. In the girls' 18 singles division Nicole Timmis and Cheryl Graham, both from Peachtree City, competed against some formidable competition. Timmis lost to Elissa Kinard from South Carolina 6-1, 6-1, while Graham dropped to fifth-seeded Jessica Rush of Texas, 6-1, 6-3.

The girls' 16 division featured Nancy Peaden and second-seeded Kacie N. Anson from Fayetteville. Peaden and Anson both won in the first round and then faced each other in the second round. Peaden emerged triumphant from the match, winning 6-0, 6-3. Peaden lost in the third round to Douglas E. Wink from North Carolina 6-1, 6-2.

The girls' 14 singles division had Priscilla Roberts of Peachtree City facing Jessica Robinson from Delaware. Roberts eventually lost 6-2, 6-4. In the girls' 12 singles division, Adriane Hodges lost to Ha Young Choi of Florida 6-0, 6-0.

There were fewer local boys competing but they made a strong showing as well. Brenton James of Peachtree City defeated Justin Alpert of New Jersey in the first round of the boys' 16 singles division 6-2, 6-3. He then lost to Jeffey Groslimond of Atlanta 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3.

In the boys' 12 singles division, Marc B. Dwyer of Peachtree City had a bye in the first round and then lost to the eventual champion, George Navas, 6-0, 6-2. Eric Jackson of Fayetteville had a bye in the first round as well. He then went on to beat Brian Gauss of Kentucky 6-1, 6-3. Jackson lost to Brian Wong of Florida in the third round 6-1, 6-3.

The Peach State Junior Classic continues to grow each year. It is played at an increasingly popular facility and the level of play continues to improve as well.
