Tyrone may help keep Fayette beautiful

By JOHN THOMPSON

Tyrone may soon become an active participant in keeping Fayette beautiful.

Caroline Price, who serves on the executive board of the volunteer organization Keep Fayette Beautiful, told the Tyrone Town Council last week the organization is seeking funds from all the local governments to improve the program.

Last year, under the guidance of executive director Deeva Bowman, the organization helped the county develop a comprehensive solid waste management plan, along with providing recycling information to the schools and residents.

But Bowman left at the beginning of this year, and the organization discovered it's going to have to pay a professional person to take the group to the next level.

Price said the group is looking at a $50,000 budget this year, with each government entity contributing 50 cents for each person that lives within its boundaries.

Town manager Barry Amos said the town's population stands at 3,801, so the town's bill would be $1,900.

Councilman Ronnie Cannon said he supports any effort to keep the county beautiful, but had one question for Price.

“Can you give me reassurance that the town of Tyrone will get $1,900 worth of value?” he said.

Price said the town would not only gain in education efforts in recycling at the school, but also beautification projects and cleaning up the litter on Ga. Highway 74.

She envisions the organization eventually having a budget of more than $100,000 with the subsidies from the governments gradually decreasing as the new executive director seeks grants to help fund the organization.

The council told Price that they would discuss the matter during their upcoming budget talks and determine whether money can be found in next year's budget, which starts July 1, to fund the project.
