The latest test results for the Coweta County School System represent a mixed bag, according to testing coordinator Lillie Smith. On the Georgia High School Graduation Test, Coweta's students scored highest in the English and math sections. In English, 97 percent of the students passed the exam, while 91 percent of the students passed the math test. On the social studies part of the exam, 84 percent of the students passed, while 76 percent of the students passed the science part of the exam. Smith said the percent passing was up for English, math and social studies, but slightly down for science. The system also received results from this year's Iowa Test of Basic Skills, which measures the reading and math abilities of elementary and middle school students. Third graders in the school system scored slightly higher this year on the reading scores, but their math scores remained the same. The system's fifth graders were the shining stars of the elementary students by posting scores higher than last year in both math and reading, Smith said. This year's eighth graders had a mixed report card by testing higher on reading skills than last year, but slightly lower on math skills. Smith said all the schools in the state are reporting their scores to the Department of Education and she expects to have a comparison of test scores with other school systems in the next two weeks.
