Twelve bands to rock Hampton Saturday

By Michael Boylan
Weekend Editor

Atlanta Motor Speedway is known for hosting large racing events that bring hundreds of thousands of raucous, dedicated racing fans.

This weekend, even though the track will be empty of racing cars, they are expecting a similar throng of fans. They will be hosting the Hard Rock (as in Cafe) RockFest, and officials estimate an audience between 150,000 and 200,000 people at the concert.

The bill consists of 12 bands, including local favorites Marvelous 3 and Collective Soul, as well as Live, Third Eye Blind, Everlast and Sugar Ray. The majority of the bands in the 12-hour-plus concert are played on Star 94, 99X, and 96 Rock on a regular basis. The first band, Taxi Ride, will take the stage at 11 a.m. A surprise closing band will take the stage at 11 p.m.

There will be plenty to do besides bake in the sun and listen to music. There will be extreme sports demonstrations and games to play, interactive activities, cultural exhibits, a ferris wheel and an on-site Hard Rock Cafe, with a seating area full of memorabilia, just like the restaurants.

Atlanta Motor Speedway is opening the camping facilities at 8 a.m. June 4.

It will cost $30 to camp for the entire weekend. Parking at the Speedway will cost $5 and if you are planning to bring a cooler it will cost $10. The cooler must not be larger than 14 inches tall, wide or long, and wine and alcohol will not be permitted.

Bottles and glass will not be allowed; the same goes for weapons or fireworks, controlled substances, pets, cameras or recording equipment, and large umbrellas.

Tickets for RockFest are $28.50 and all are general admission and for all ages. Each band will do a full set, so the price of admission comes to about 20 cents a song or $2.38 per band.

Tickets can be purchased at any Ticketmaster outlet or at the Hard Rock Cafe. Phone 404-249-6400, or over the Web, visit www.ticketmaster.com

Bring sunscreen, a positive attitude, some cash, and extra patience for when you try to leave the parking lot after the show.
