Pigs N'
Wheels returns to Newnan By Michael Boylan Automobiles and barbecue are both very popular in this region of the country, so it should be no surprise that the annual Pigs n' Wheels festival in Coweta County continues to grow in size. The festival is typically made up of barbecue contests and automobile exhibits, but this year a full scale carnival has been added to the festivities. The fun begins Friday evening. There will be a rally of cars at the Newnan Court Square at 6 p.m.. At 8 p.m., the cars will make a motorcade and travel to the fairgrounds. Festival officials expect more than 300 cars this year. Friday also will be the night for the Brunswick stew judging, expected to begin at the fairgrounds at 7 p.m. Pigs N' Wheels is now a Memphis in May-sanctioned event, meaning more teams will come to compete in the barbecue contests for more points and prize money. Points help teams qualify for the Barbecue World Championships. Being a sanctioned event also means that there must be on-site judging as well as blind judging. Saturday, the Barbecue Cookoff will continue with the three major categories being judged; Whole Hog, Pork Shoulder, and Pork Rib. The results will be announced at 4 p.m. Saturday. The antique, classic and new car show will continue through the weekend, including a display of some dragsters from Speed Zone. Rides,
games and concessions also will be at the carnival, as
well as racing pigs and an exotic petting zoo. There will
be cooking demonstrations from Patty Gironda of the Old
Garden Inn and the television show Home at
Last, which can be seen on Sunday will feature the Great Coweta Cook Off. The cook off will award cash prizes for the first, second and third place plates. Dishes can be any meat, fish, fowl, wild game or stew. The festival will be open Friday from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the carnival is free and rides are ticketed individually. The cost for the Pigs N' Wheels show is $5 for adults and $2 for children 4-12. The festival is at Powers' Crossroads in Newnan.
