Men charged with attempted auto thefts

Two McDonough men were charged Thursday in Superior Court in connection with several attempted auto thefts last summer.

Davonta D. Bell and Monte Shawn McCollum each face four counts of entering an auto with intent to commit theft, as well as one count of loitering.

The alleged loitering incident took place July 1, the same day as the attempted car thefts, between 10 and 11 p.m. on Walt Banks Road. The two men allegedly tried to steal four separate vehicles — a 1985 Toyota pickup, a 1995 Jeep Wrangler, a 1986 Nissan pickup, and a 1989 Honda Accord — belonging to two different people.

Also in Superior Court Thursday, Yolanda Scott of Jonesboro was charged with deposit account fraud, for allegedly attempting to pay Harris and Sons restaurant in Fayetteville last March with a bad check for $545.79 drawn on the First State Bank of Donalsonville.

Rhonda Lynn Smith of Senoia was charged with theft by taking for allegedly stealing more than $500 in cash from Eckerd last June.

Wesley Lagar Starr of Fayetteville was charged with forgery in the first degree in connection with an incident last August where he allegedly wrote a forged $80 check on someone else's account.

Adam Wayne Taylor of Douglasville was charged with violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act (possession of Xanax), theft by taking, escape, seatbelt violation and minor possession of alcohol.

Taylor, who was under 21 at the time, is alleged to have possessed alcohol and Xanax when stopped by police last June. The theft and escape charges stem from his allegedly escaping police custody with handcuffs that were property of a member of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

Jonathan Seth Towe of Riverdale faces six charges in connection with a March 1997 traffic incident in Peachtree City: VGCSA (possession of marijuana), driving under the influence of drugs, defective equipment, expired tag, no proof of insurance, and an open container.

Richard Louis Trammell of Atlanta was charged with two counts of forgery in the first degree and one count of driving with a suspended license after an alleged incident in Tyrone last July.

He is accused of having altered two checks, changing the amounts from $2.50 to $2,516.85 and from $1.50 to $5,142.90 for purchases at Tyrone Power & Equipment. It was discovered that same day that he was driving even though his license was suspended, police said.

Torein Berell Watson of McDonough was charged with VGCSA (possession of cocaine) in connection with an alleged incident last June.

Donna Gail Ponick of Fayetteville was charged with sexual battery and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer after an alleged incident last October.
