U.S. Rep. Mac Collins, R-Hampton, recently was named Taxpayer Hero by the Council of Citizens Against Government Waste, America's largest fiscal watchdog group. The nonpartisan, nonprofit organization is dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, mismanagement and abuse in government, according to its literature. This year, Collins said, the average American worked 131 days into the year just to pay the tax bill to the federal, state and local governments. It is wrong that middle-class American families pay more in taxes than they pay for food, clothing, shelter, and transportation combined, he added. As a member of the Committee on Ways and Means, I will continue to work to design a tax simplification bill which provides $778 billion in tax relief over the next ten years, Collins concluded. ½¬@
