Student to explore people and customs abroad this summer

While other students mow lawns and swim in the neighborhood pool this summer, 13-year-old Joshua Rakestraw will be learning flamenco dancing in Spain, and Tuscan cooking in Italy.

Rakestraw, an eighth grade student at Fayette Middle School, will participate in the "People to People" Student Ambassador program initiated in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower. The international exchange gives students the opportunity to explore the customs and culture of other countries firsthand, according to Rakestraw.

He will be one of a 30-member delegation traveling from Atlanta to Spain, France and Italy for 23 days of education and adventure.

Rakestraw was selected based on his academic performance and commitment to his extracurricular and community activities. "I'm really looking forward to this trip," Rakestraw said. His parents, Jackie and Dyron, are supportive. "It's a great opportunity for Joshua," his mother said.

In addition to touring significant landmarks in the three Mediterranean countries, Rakestraw will pair up with another student for home stays. Keeping a journal of his travels is a requirement, and his initial reaction to being selected, and notes on his orientation meeting are carefully transcribed.

Rakestraw will earn a half academic credit for his stay abroad. He also must earn a portion of his tuition through a sponsorship, a task he is current tackling by contacting local businesses.

Rakestraw is hoping to share his summer abroad when he returns home by speaking and showing slides to groups and organizations who have an interest in "People to People." For information visit the student ambassador web site at www.studentambassador.org.
