Options for Memorial Day weekend

By MICHAEL BOYLAN

Weekend Editor

This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, a weekend to remember and honor our veterans.

Memorial Day has also become synonymous with the term "three-day weekend." It is often a family's first good chance to enjoy nice weather and some time together. Whether you go to Six Flags, Stone Mountain or simply as far as your own back yard, there are plenty of options for things to do this weekend.

A parade, sponsored by the Peachtree City Kiwanis Club, will start at The Gathering Place at 7 a.m.on Monday. The parade route will end at Memorial Park at City Hall Plaza. The Kiwanis Club will provide coffee and donuts and Mac Collins will be the speaker. Also at the ceremony will be Mayor Bob Lenox giving remarks and thee Marine Corps Color Guard. The V.F.W. will then lay a wreath at the memorial.

The American Legion will hold a memorial service at the Peachtree City cemetery at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Also taking place in Peachtree City this weekend is the National Junior tennis tournament at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.

The Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers is hosting its Spring Funfair and Expo starting Friday, May 28 and running until Sunday, June 6. The Funfair offers rides, games, exhibits, petting zoos, racing pigs, country music and wrestling events. The Funfair opens at 4 p.m. Wednesdays and 11 a.m. weekends and Memorial Day. Phone 888-434-FAIR for information.

Lake Lanier and Stone Mountain both have their share of entertainment this weekend as well. Both parks have picnic and recreation areas, water parks, exhibits and entertainers this weekend. Stone Mountain will host the Beach Boys Family and Friends Sunday and local favorites, Papparazzi, will open the show.

Papparazzi features Randy Watkins and Tim Greer, who grew up in Fayetteville and currently live in Coweta County. The rest of the band lives in and around Coweta County. Papparazzi has played a number of Fox 97 events, including the Fox Family Fun Night in Fayetteville last year. They mix oldies, rock and country into a frenzy of toe-tapping fun music.

Callaway Gardens will host the 40th annual Masters Water Ski Challenge this Saturday and Sunday. The finest water skiers from around the world will compete in jump, slalom and trick events. Tamara Comstock will perform Saturday night at Robin lake Beach. To purchase advance tickets phone 1-888-806-2783.

If none of those options appealed to you, you can always go see the Braves battle the Dodgers or you could go see Star Wars. Enjoy the weather, and drive carefully.
