Keep mass transit out of Fayette

Letters from Our Readers

I am positively outraged that Fayette County would and has considered mass transit as a viable means of transportation into our community.

I am a Peachtree City resident and one of the major selling factors for this wonderful city is the fact that no mass transit exists!

Couple this with the fact that we are far removed from the interstate system and you have an equation for less crime. Peachtree City is notoriously low in the crime statistics, due in part to the socioeconomic status of the majority of the residents. The lack of mass transit and distance to the interstates play a big part as well.

Criminals need an easy escape route to commit an effective crime. This cannot be accomplished in Fayette County by fleeing to the nearest on-ramp to the interstate. It can, however, be accomplished by fleeing to the nearest departing bus. We do not, in Fayette County, have many criminals that reside here. I realize that every "Utopia" must have several criminals somewhere, but have they surfaced in Fayette? Not yet.

Stuart Hoff, president of mass transit and charter bus service, stated that "growing traffic congestion demands that local residents have alternatives to using their cars."

Peachtree City has golf carts which are virtually nonpolluting vehicles. Perhaps our residents should utilize the miles and miles of pathways more frequently to run their day to day errands.

By allowing mass transit into our community, we are inviting criminal activity in. Our normal way of life will undoubtedly be disrupted. Before we know it, MARTA will force its way in, with more criminals following. This is invariably the biggest mistake Peachtree City has ever made.

I urge the public to boycott the instillation of this program. Don't fill the buses. Remember, this is only a pilot program, and does not need to be adopted permanently.
