A one-car accident last week has resulted in the third traffic fatality this year in unincorporated Fayette County, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

Aaron Ramage, 22, of Fayetteville was traveling southbound on Sams Road in north Fayette County at about 3:15 a.m. May 16 when his car ran off the road and crashed, according to Maj. Wayne Hannah of the Sheriff's Department. He had just turned off Lee's Mill Road.

A statement released Monday by Hannah explained that Ramage's car ran off the roadway onto the shoulder, then crossed back over the roadway before leaving the road and striking a tree.

Although he was apparently wearing a seatbelt, his car was severely damaged on its right side due to impact with the tree, which intruded into the car to the center console area. Ramage appeared to have been traveling at a high rate of speed, according to the statement.

Ramage was transported by Phoenix Air Helicopter to Atlanta Medical Center with severe head injuries, and investigators were notified Friday that Ramage had died as a result of his injuries. He was the only occupant of the car.

A blood sample has been submitted to the Georgia State Crime Lab for analysis, which is a standard procedure in fatality crashes, Hannah said. It is not known at this point if alcohol was involved.
