Health Matters: Hospital auxiliary members
provide that something extra

By MICHAEL BOYLAN

If you've been in Fayette Community Hospital, you've probably seen them and didn't even realize it.

They are the Fayette Community Hospital Auxiliary, and with 282 current members they are one of the largest active auxiliary organizations in Georgia. They help out in almost every way imaginable, providing assistance in areas such as the emergency room, the intensive care unit, administration, the gift shop and the fitness center.

On top of all the help they offer in the hospital, they also coordinate blood drives, fund-raisers and decorating the hospital during the holidays. They are always present to brighten a patient's day. They can be seen delivering flowers and comforting family members. The auxilary recently won the 1998 American Red Cross Blood Drive Award for the largest participation from a community hospital in the Southeast District.

"The auxiliary is a critical stone in our Hospital's strong foundation," said Darrell Cutts, Fayette Community Hospital CEO. "From organizing fund-raisers to helping patients to their treatment rooms, these people are an indispensable part of our organization, and we greatly appreciate all they do for us."

It is easy for anyone to get involved with the auxiliary. There are two types of volunteers: active and associate. Active volunteers contribute $25 a year and pledge to give their time for a minimum of 70 hours a year or 50 hours during evenings and weekends.

Associate members are those who have the opportunity to enjoy all auxiliary-sponsored events, from community fund-raisers to the annual holiday luncheon, have no required number of volunteer hours and make an annual contribution of $75.

Men and women of all ages are encouraged to join. For information or to join stop by the hospital and fill out an application, or phone the auxiliary office at 770-719-7098.
