Laws for handicapped students shouldn't protect kids with guns

Letters to the Editor

I hope that Bob Barr will not back down in his fight to make schools safer and to restore some sanity to the laws governing students with disabilities and weapons.

Those so called advocacy group leaders are fighting Barr's proposal to remove all students who bring weapons to schools are being disingenuous when they say that the law allows schools to deal with these students.

Educators know that their hands are tied in regards to discipline of students classified as "disabled," even if weapons are involved. The laws have been stretched to include any student who has ever had a problem, contributing to the ludicrousness of our situation.

The only effective option that officials have is to arrest the student, and I've seen quotes by some advocates that this should be done away with. Bringing a gun onto campus is not a manifestation of anyone's handicap.

Those who oppose Mr. Barr on this one would be better off spending their time and energy actually trying to help children instead of fighting for their right to take guns onto school campuses without consequences.
