Lady Lakers add two more to team
By MICHAEL BOYLAN
A.C. McCullers, new head coach
of the Lady Laker basketball team at Clayton College and State University,
announced his first two signees, Chelle Warren and Sequicia Lowe, to the
program last week.
Freshman Chelle Warren is a 5'6" point guard from Riverdale who led the Woodward Academy Lady War Eagles to the Class AAA state championship this past season. Warren averaged 7.3 points, 2.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game. She started for Woodward all four years, was named the team's most valuable offensive player in 1998 and was also named to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Tip Off all region team that same year. Lowe is a 5'11" junior college transfer and a former Morrow Lady Mustang. Morrow High School was the last place that McCullers coached. Lowe averaged 10.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game at forward for McCullers and helped bring the team to a runner-up finish in the class AAAA championship in 1997. She has been at Calhoun Community College for the past two seasons averaging 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. "I am extremely happy to have these two young ladies join our program," said McCullers. "Sequicia has collegiate and national tournament experience and is an outstanding post player. I am thrilled to have her back in my program. "Chelle gives us exactly what we need. She is a true point guard. She is quick, athletic and can definitely handle the ball," he added. The Lady Lakers return all five starters from last year's 9-18 squad, including the top five scorers who accounted for nearly 80 percent of the team's total offense.
Roadsters take first tournament
The 14 and Under Roadsters kicked off the 1999 slow pitch softball season with a dominating first place finish in the season opening tournament at McCurry Park. Their offensive attack during the tournament included 46 hits. The team was led by Jennifer Lewis who went 7 of 10 from the plate during the tournament, including two homeruns. Stephanie Boast hit two homeruns as well, while Megan Jonson, Kari Dalton and Taylor Willis each had one. The near-perfect defensive
campaign was lead by Sara Finley, Stephanie Boast and Sara Corrazini,
who was flawless on the mound. All of the players made major contributions
which led to the tournament championship.
