Fayette County officials last week spent some time basking in the afterglow of a hostage situation in which everything went right and lives were saved.

County commissioners presented citations to four E911 operators who were on duty when Esther Green dialed 911 on her cell phone April 26.

The young Fayette mother and her baby had been carjacked, but the quick-thinking Green managed to punch the emergency numbers on her phone and toss it aside so that her attackers didn't know it was on, then call out the names of streets and businesses so police could find the car and arrested the men.

Dispatchers Holly Eason, Marion Weston, LeAnne Kennedy and Eureka Franklin were singled out for working as a team to pick up clues that Green called out and direct police to her car, which was traveling north on Ga. Highway 85 when Riverdale police made the arrest.

Eason, who at age 20 has been on the job for only nine months, handled the call like a veteran, according to her supervisors.

"These are my guardian angels," said Green Thursday as commissioners presented awards to the four. "It couldn't have happened any better than it did."

"This was a team effort and they all worked together to get the job done," said Peggy Glaze, assistant director of Fayette's 911 dispatch center.

The incident has captured the attention of national news and talk media. Among the television programs that have covered the event, Glaze said, are "America's Most Wanted," "World's Scariest Police Chases," ABC's "Good Morning America," "The Today Show," "Extra" and "Dateline."

People and Redbook magazines also are doing pieces on the incident, said Glaze.

"It has been so long since 911 has been identified in the spotlight as a major component in an emergency," said Glaze. "I'm very proud not only of these four operators but also all of the 911 operators."
