The Adopt-a-Highway program is well known and respected. A community group will adopt a highway and maintain it's appearance, keeping it clean and safe.Recently, a group of homeschoolers from Fayette and Coweta County adopted a stream at Line Creek Nature Center in Peachtree City.

"It's a good way to dispel the theory that homeschoolers just sit at home in front of the television," says Nature Center director Marcia Brown. "These kids are eager to learn and eager to help."

They are involved in a statewide program that includes over a thousand volunteersWhat the homeschoolers are doing is learning how to monitor the macrobiotic activity and cleanliness of streams. The data that they record will be sent to the environmental protection division of the Department of Natural Resources, where a statewide database is being kept. With the knowledge that comes back from the adopt a stream groups, the state will know where trouble areas may be.

The homeschoolers have taken classes on water monitoring and the identification of macroinvertebrates, or bugs.
