The Fayette County Tigers boys soccer team is headed to the
final four for the third year in a row. The team traveled for five
hours to Savannah to face Benedictine High School. Within the first
20 minutes of the game, Fayette County was up 3-0. The
Tigers had one brief lapse on defense, allowing a goal before
halftime, but they made the margin three goals again with about eight
minutes left to play. Trevor Bowman had two goals for the Tigers as
did David Dirring. Dirring's goals were unassisted corner kicks
and Trevor Bowman's goals came off of throw-ins, assisted by
Todd Edwards and Derek Walton.
The Tigers hosted Parkview last evening at 8 p.m., after the
paper went to press. The stingy defense of Fayette County should
slow Parkview down. Parkview's girls will come to face the
Fayette County Lady Tigers tonight at 7:30 p.m. Both Fayette
County and Parkview were in the final four last year. The Lady
Tigers defeated Tift County 3-0 on Saturday.
Crystal Rene DeCotret scored the first goal by intercepting
a ball being cleared by the defense and chipping it above the
Tift keeper's head. The early goal by Fayette caused Tift to slow
their game down and really wall their defense. Mandy Kovach
broke throg the defense and scored off of an assist by Christine Wix.
The final goal came in the second half when Mandy Kovach put a
ball across the box and DeCotret blasted it into the net.
The Lady Tigers put all the pressure on Tift, who had not lost
a game all season. They outshot the Lady Devils 43-1 and
dominated them in every aspect of the game. The Lady Tiger defense has
been strong all season but it seems that the offense is clicking more
now in the postseason. A win tonight and the Lady Tigers could be
in the championship game, possibly facing their rivals the Lady Chiefs.
