Lessons from Littleton

The horrible lessons from Littleton, Colorado are still being sifted and digested for us in America. My hopes and prayers are that we will open our eyes and our hearts to these lessons and do something about them.

Not long ago there was a book that came out called "why Johnny can't read". Shortly after that, there was another book out entitled "why Johnny can't tell right from wrong".

While I was still on Active Duty as an Army Chaplain I was working at the Forces Command Chaplain's Office responsible for "Special Projects". I was responsible for any project that the Command Chaplain wanted for distribution to all our Combat Soldiers within the Army.

During the late 60s and early 70s, the Army had a program that all men and women in the Army had to attend, once a month. It was called "Character Guidance". In this once a month meeting, the Chaplain was required to present a moral or ethical situation and provide a program that would deal with the issue. Today, this seems to be happening on our TV screens in talk shows, but with the likes of Jerry Springer and others in total filth and violence. Then we do have a few shows like "Oprah" that seem to bring out the good side of our society.

We discovered in the Army that when you told someone to "be good" or "behave" that they didn't have a clue what that meant. Many had come from some very rough situations in their homes and in their personal lives, and their "compass needle" was just spinning around. It was in this back drop that I was called into the Command Chaplain's office and given the responsibility to come up with a manual to be taught throughout the Army. We entitled it "America's Army Core Values". In it we created "lesson plans to be taught throughout the Army.

If you have ever raised children, you never have to teach them to throw a temper tantrum. You do have to teach them to NOT to throw a temper tantrum. In other words, you never have to teach someone to do wrong, but you must teach them to do right. This is where one's faith and values come in.

After the Littleton killings, every person interviewed from the DA'S office to the representative from the Association for the Prevention of School Violence on CNN, said that this incident was a "heart" problem, a

"spiritual" problem, or a "family" problem. Yet, we continue to ensure that we are always "politically correct" and always ensure that the American Civil Liberties Union doesn't get upset with us and that we cower to every liberal idea that comes our way.

FOLKS WAKE UP!! THEY ARE KILLING OUR CHILDREN IN OUR CLASSROOMS!!

Something has to be done very drastically different than the way we have been doing business in the education of our children. If you as a parent would like to meet and discuss this and come up with a proposal to present to our school boards or to the President of the United States, e-mail me at Khern2365@aol.com or call at 770-719-2365 This cannot go on without being addressed!!

Continue to pray for guidance, understanding and wisdom in the quest of raising our children. Also uplift the wonderful educators in our county and country, who deal with these issues on a daily basis. God bless them everyone.!
