$13 million at a sitting
County agenda heavy on spendingBy

Fayette
County commissioners last week spent almost $13
million in eight separate agenda items.
Most
of that, $12.3 million, went for a contract on
construction of the south Fayette water treatment
plant on Antioch Road near Lake Horton. Bates
Engineers/Contractors Inc. was low bidder for
that work. The plant will provide six million
gallons of water per day, with expansion capacity
of nine mgd.
Commissioners
also approved:
ä $203,624 for a new central
computer, to be provided by Sirius Computer
Solutions. A five-year lease is up on the
county's current central computer.
Finance
director Emory McHugh will recommend later
whether the county should buy the equipment
outright or lease it for $50,000 a year.
ä $204,000 for Superior Court
records management, including scanning of
records, computer equipment and new filing
systems to help store records in less space. (See
related story)
ä $98,111.55 to replace a
culvert under Sandy Creek Road.
ä About $33,000 for a GMC
Suburban for the fire and emergency services
department. That figure may go down.
Commissioners directed the purchasing department
to get a new bid, hoping to save money because
the model year is nearing an end.
ä $8,000 for replacement of a
computer and a copier in the planning department.
ä Up to $2,335 to help sponsor
a concert by the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra from
Ayr, Scotland. Peachtree City has agreed to match
that figure, and Fayetteville will be asked to
chip in as well. Commissioner Linda Wells failed
to convince the board to hold off on approving
the money and ask the Board of Education to put
in a portion as well.
The
visit is part of the school system's Achievers
International program, in which local schools
exchange culture with those in Scotland.
ä $1,065.76 for repair of a
sheriff's department car damaged in a wreck.
