Beautification group wants to grow

A local group committed to making sure Fayette County stays neat and tidy is on the move, looking for support in its quest to grow in the coming months.

Keep Fayette Beautiful, a certified affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, has been in existence about a year and a half, but it has been a busy time. Overseen by a board of directors and led by an executive director, the volunteer organization has coordinated Christmas tree recycling county-wide, sponsored a “Waste in the Workplace” seminar for local businesses, and celebrated Earth Day with school programs and a 10-kilometer race.

Other first-year accomplishments included funding a Georgia Native Wildflower garden, presenting a teacher training workshop, and assisting local municipalities in updating their solid waste management plans.

Board chairman Caroline Price says that the group is looking for a new executive director, as the former one moved to Colorado in December. The organization would also like to make that a full-time position fairly soon.

The next few months will be highlighted by a membership drive, in which Keep Fayette Beautiful will enlist the support of individuals, businesses and governments. The group also is looking to establish a member database, publish a newsletter, develop a recycling center and prioritize beautification projects throughout the county.

The outreach to local government is the first step, already under way and slated to conclude next week. “We are looking for county-wide governmental support, both in spirit and financially,” said Price.

Outreach to individuals and businesses will commence later in the summer.
