John Davis Whelchel, M.D., appointed director of Organ Transplant Services

The Board of Trustees of Piedmont Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of John Davis Whelchel, M.D., as full-time director of Organ Transplant Services.

Dr. Whelchel is a nationally recognized leader in kidney transplantation and has been a member of the medical staff at Piedmont Hospital for 12 years. He also serves as medical director for LifeLink of Georgia, a non-profit tissue and organ recovery agency which coordinates the computer waiting list through the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), matching recipients and donors as organs and tissue become available. The agency's service area includes 76 counties in Georgia, with a population of approximately 4.5 million people.

“We are pleased to expand our transplant services by adding a full-time director with the experience and expertise of Dr. Whelchel,” states Richard B. Hubbard III, CEO of Piedmont Hospital. “We look forward to continuing to serve the transplant needs of the community.”

Piedmont Hospital's renal transplant program was created in 1986 in cooperation with Emory University Hospital and Egleston Children's Hospital. More than 600 kidney transplants have been performed at Piedmont Hospital since the program's inception. In addition to renal transplants, physicians at Piedmont Hospital also perform tissue and corneal transplants.

Located on 26 acres in the heart of Buckhead, Piedmont Hospital is a private, not-for-profit organization with 2,300 employees and a medical staff of over 800 physicians. Piedmont's legacy of medical excellence began in 1905 as a specialty hospital founded by two physicians considered ahead of their time. Nearly a century later, Piedmont Hospital excels in primary care, cardiology, neuroscience, oncology, diabetes, orthopaedics/sports medicine, and maternity and women's services. Piedmont Hospital is a founding member of PROMINA Health System.
