Before an enormous crowd and with the heat of the biggest
rivalry in the county between them, the Fayette County Tigers and
the McIntosh Chiefs baseball teams battled for first place in the
sub-region on Friday. A win by the Chiefs could sneak them into
first place, a position held by Fayette County since the first game of
the season.
Lee Roberson (6-2) took the mound for the Tigers,
pitching five innings, striking out eight McIntosh batters and
walking two. Roberson gave up three hits and four earned runs while on
the mound but he also chipped in with some offense, getting
two hits and driving in four runs. The Tigers got a plethora of
offense on Friday, including a three run homerun by Jeff Barnes and
two hits a piece Brandon Croft and Brent Latham.
"They knew they had to win this game to win the
sub-region," said Coach Robert Townsend of the Tigers determined
performance. "They just went out and did what they had to do. Now,
we just need to rest up and see who we face this weekend."
The Tigers will face the winner of the McIntosh/LaGrange
series, which started on Monday, at Fayette County on Friday at 7
p.m. The second game of the series will be played at 4 p.m.
on Saturday. If necessary a third game will be played at 7 p.m. .
