Church gets zoning OK for new home

The Church of Christ of Fayette County can now begin the process of building its new home.

Fayetteville City Council Monday approved a zoning change to allow the church building on Redwine Road between Ramah and Price roads.

Formerly housed in a building at Ga. Highway 85 and Pine Trail Road, the church sold that building to Concordia Partners Inc. for its planned new Barnes & Noble shopping center and has been meeting in a store front ever since.

Church members thought their new site was zoned properly, but there was a mix-up at City Hall. A former planning director told church officials that the land's residential zoning would allow a church building, but that turned out to be wrong, said current planning director Jahnee Prince.

Law requires that residentially zoned property front on a major thoroughfare in order to allow a church. Redwine is listed as a collector road in city planning documents.

Council corrected that mistake Monday, granting a change to O&I (office and institutional) zoning, with the condition that the zoning reverts to residential if the property should ever be used for anything other than a church.

In other action Monday, council:

Approved more than $1 million in budget amendments to funnel state money into local road projects and use some of the city's reserve fund for other capital projects. Among projects being funded are widening of Jeff Davis Drive from Ga. Highway 54 to Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard, an ambitious beautification project in Hwy. 54 and Ga. Highway 85 medians, and a new air-conditioning system for City Hall.

Approved a conditional beer and wine license for Los Toribio restaurant, a planned new Mexican restaurant in the new Kroger shopping center on Hwy. 85 south.

Owner Ramon A. Toribio Jr. said he hopes the restaurant will be open by the end of May. It will seat about 150 in a 4,000-sq. ft. space, including patio seating, he said. The restaurant will be on the left side of the shopping center, beside Blockbuster Video.

Tabled Hayes Development Company's request for annexation and office zoning for a medical office complex and bank until July 19. The firm hopes to develop the complex on Hwy. 54 near Fayette Community Hospital, but the request has been delayed several times as owner Randy Hayes works for an agreement to share a driveway with the hospital, something council members have insisted on.
