Fayette auction lovers are in for a treat.

All five local cities, the county and the Board of Education are combining their surplus supplies and equipment for an auction so huge it will be spread between two locations.

Auctioneers from Arwood Auction Company will rap their gavels May 1

The first auction will be at 10 a.m. at the county public works building on McDonough Road, and the second, featuring Board of Education items, at 2 p.m. at the old Fayette County High School building.

Fayetteville and the county have been combining auctions for a number of years, said city finance director Lynn Raven. Members of a joint purchasing committee discussed that practice recently as part of local governments' attempts to comply with a state law that requires that they seek ways to combine services to save taxpayers money, Raven said.

"All of the municipalities plus the Board of Education wanted to participate," she said, adding,, "The school board is going to have a ton of stuff."

Fayetteville City Council Monday declared 256 items surplus so the equipment can be sold during the auction.

Items range from cars, including a 1990 Ford Crown Victoria, to computers.

Nineteen walkie talkies are on the list from the city police department, along with window air conditioners, desks, a water fountain and a soft drink machine from public works.

Need a weight bench? The fire department is selling two. Or you could pick up an Epson Action Laser 2 printer from the police department.

A diesel tractor also will be on the block, and two hay bailers.

School board items will include student and teacher desks, color televisions, computers, audio-visual and library equipment, a piano, lunch tables and file cabinets.

Items to be sold will be on display starrting at 8 a.m. auction day.

For information on the auction, phone any of the local governments involved.
