Dr. Terry L. Maple, director of Zoo Atlanta, author, and Peachtree City resident, will be on hand Saturday at Omega Book Center to autograph his book "Zoo Man." Maple's book was published in 1993 by Longstreet Press and tells about his challenge to rebuild the Atlanta Zoo, transforming it into a world class animal habitat. Maple has many titles to his credit among them, "Ethics on the Ark," published in 1995 and also available at Omega and reference books such as "Captivity and Behavior," (1979) "Orangutan Behavior," 1980 and "Gorilla Behavior," (1980).For seven years, Maple was the editor-in-chief of the professional journal "Zoo Biology." Maple has headed up Zoo Atlanta for 14 years, raising its status to one of the world's most innovative zoos. In 1987, the zoo was honored by the Metropolitan Communities Foundation as Atlanta's "best-managed nonprofit corporation." Other honors include a special conservation achievement for endangered wildlife from the Georgia Wildlife Federation in 1996 and in 1998, the Stanford Business School Alumni Association recognized Maple for his outstading zoo management and impact on the Atlanta civic community. At Georgia Tech, Maple has been teaching environmental psychology for 17 years. He and his graduate students have investigated perceptions and attitudes about wildlife, and strategic social marketing. He lectures widely on the need to protect wildlife habitat. Born in east Los Angeles in 1946, he was raised in Chula Vista, a small town south of San Diego. Maple studied at the University of California at Davis where he received his Master's and Ph.D degrees in psychobiology. In 1971, he studied in Sweden as a Rotary International Graduate Fellow at the University of Stockholm.
