County commissioners should stop trying to 'act like God'

Letters from Our Readers

I agree with Mr. Inge about the "massive mailbox" use in Fayette County. Last year we constantly had our wooden post mailbox knocked down, broken into and crushed. Every time we would fix it, the teens would come right back and tear it down again.

My husband repaired it many times. We called the police, filed reports, but obviously they rarely catch mailbox vandals. It's not exactly on the top of their "to do" list, not to mention the difficulty and nearly impossible task they would have to actually be watching our mailbox the exact day and time that the vandals would hit.

But my question is this: Can everything be moved to protect people from their careless or reckless behavior? I think not. What about not having stop signs or red lights, because someone may not be paying attention, and may not stop and just may cause an accident or death.

What about fire hydrants, telephone poles or trees? What's next? Doesn't the use of a cellular phone while driving pose a greater threat to others than a mailbox on the side of the road? Aren't there many more deaths caused by this than by a mailbox? Are our going to outlaw them in Fayette County also?

It wasn't until we constructed a more solid mailbox that the vandalism stopped. The vandals just went down the road to a neighbor and started knocking down their wooden post mailbox. If it's knocked down, we, the homeowners, are required to fix it, every time, so how can you tell us we can't put up a strong box to keep vandals from constantly knocking it down?

If y'all regulate mailboxes in this way, then you should be sued, unless you also regulate cellular phones and anything else that might cause a death because of a person's carelessness.

Unfortunately we cannot stop stupidity, and innocent people do sometimes get hurt or die. This is a fact of life. Y'all are not God, so quit trying to act like Him.
