Americans trading their freedoms for security

Letters from Our Readers

[an error occurred while processing this directive]

I just finished reading on your website your piece about liberty vs. security [Dave Hamrick's column, April 7], and I must say I agree with you 100 percent.

Americans are having their freedoms taken from them every day, and they neither know about it nor care. It is absolutely tragic to think that people would give up their freedom for economic security.

You posed the question, "How do you get people to wake up and realize that the freedom for which so many have suffered and died is slowly being taken from us without a shot being fired?"

My answer is: By doing exactly what you have done in this article. People will not look for evidence of this on their own. We who can see it must tell others we must shake them out of their complacency.

Or maybe, we need a foreign enemy to invade us and take all freedom away. Sadly, that may be what it takes to get people to wake up.
